- Markup of historical documents as searchable text
The American Memory DTD
(Document Type Definition) is used for SGML markup of
digitized historical documents. This TEI-based DTD was developed for the
minimal encoding of texts that would be linked to page images. The simple,
streamlined DTD allows for modest description of text structure and very
little description of typographical layout. This DTD is not optimized for
value-added encoding that inserts interpretive commentary or scholarly data
into the electronic document. For more information on the American Memory DTD,
contact LeeEllen Friedland [[email protected], (202) 707-3980].
The American Memory DTD and associated documents, including a
sample of keying instructions for
contractors, are available for downloading by anonymous FTP from ftp.loc.gov
in directory /pub/american.memory/sgml/ammem2/.
- Cataloging Policy and Support Office. Draft Interim Guidelines for Cataloging Electronic Resources
- Network Development and MARC Standards
Office. Guidelines for the
Use of Field 856 at the Library of Congress.
- Network Development and MARC Standards
Office. Dublin
Core/MARC/GILS Crosswalk, April 7, 1997. This document proposes a
mapping among the fifteen Dublin Core data elements, MARC bibliographic data
elements, and GILS attributes.
- Network Development and MARC Standards
Office. MARC DTDs
(Document Type Definitions). An implementation of Standard Generalized
Markup Language (SGML) for use with MARC data.
- The Encoded Archival
Description DTD is used at the Library of Congress for marking up archival
finding aids in SGML. The Library's Network Development
and MARC Standards Office is the maintenance agency for the EAD Standard. Sample finding aids are
available, although those created so far at the Library of Congress are all
based on existing
paper documents and do not include links to digital reproductions.
