Polish Declarations: Building the Digital Collection

Volumes 1 through 13 of the manuscript collection Polish Declarations of Admiration and Friendship for the United States were digitized by the Digital Scan Center, Information Technology Services Directorate, Library of Congress. In order to preserve the original materials, the volumes were scanned face-up in their bindings, one page at a time. Scanning these oversized manuscript volumes was done in the Library’s Digital Scan Lab using a PhaseOne FX overhead scanner with a Horseman 4 x 5 for the image capture. The volumes were placed in a Linhof cradle which protected and secured the volumes for scanning. The master, or archival, version of the pages (containing typography and line art), is a 300-dots-per-inch (dpi) color image in the TIFF format. Derivatives of the Master TIFF are converted to JPEG 2000 images, complete with a navigator GIF for zooming in on a particular portion of an image.
